Just in case it hasn’t been shoved down your throat enough, it’s Valentine’s day today
The one day of the year when all the shitty boyfriends are obligated to do something nice for their long-suffering partner so she can make it through another year insisting that they have it in them to turn into a real boyfriend.
The one day of the year where it’s wholly accepted that restaurants and hotels can charge a lot more for a lot less in the name of romance.
The one day of the year where the serially single can breathe a sigh of relief, knowing they don’t have to go through all that crap.
Cynical?
You bet your ass it’s cynical.
We recently booked tickets to go see Opera in the Caves, and thought we’d make a weekend of it in the Blue Mountains.
It was when I started researching where to stay, that the forced significance of the weekend became apparent.
Oh well, I thought. It’s only the first night, then everything goes back to normal.
It turns out that the hotels and restaurants in the Blue Mountains didn’t get the memo that Valentine’s day is only supposed to be for one day.
The prices have been hiked for the whole weekend.
The two restaurants I was keen to go to have special Valentine’s day dinners scheduled. For Friday, saturday and Sunday for God’s sake!
The kind of dinners where you get to choose from a lesser menu, but you have the opportunity to pay more for the privilege of having a rose on your table. A rose! Oh, the joy!
We decided to bite the bullet and stay there anyway, but I for one, won’t be participating in the sham that is Valentine’s day.
I’m an awesome enough boyfriend for the other 364 days of the year.
I don’t need to be told that I have to demonstrate my affection on a particular day so I can prove my worth as a partner.
I won’t have it!
I won’t, damnit!
Thank God my girlfriend feels the same way (about me being an awesome boyfriend, that is).
